Facts about the Danish Monarchy
→ Queen Margrethe II is the first Queen regnant of Denmark ever.
Despite being called Margrethe II, she is technically Margrethe I. When Queen Margrethe became Queen she made the decision that she would be known as Margrethe II. She did this because she wanted to honour Queen Consort Margrethe of Norway, former Princess of Denmark (now known as Queen Margrethe I).
Queen Margrethe I was Queen Consort of Norway and regent of Denmark, Norway and Sweden in the 1400’s. Margrethe I is to this day truly one of the most iconic leaders, but she was never regnant in her own right.
