A day following the death of King Frederick IX of Denmark, his daughter Margrethe is proclaimed queen by Prime Minister Jens Otto Krag, thus becoming Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, 15 January 1972.
Following the proclamation, Queen Margrethe spoke to the people and concluded her speech with what became her maxim: “Guds hjæelp, Folkets kærlighed, Danmarks styrke.” (God’s help, the People’s love, Denmark’s strength.)
